Effect of laser light on germination of Lavatera thuringiaca L. seeds studied by binomial distribution

Abstrakt

The effect of laser light stimulation for 0 (C), 1, 5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes on the germination of Lavatera thuringiaca L. seeds was examined. The experimental data was analysed with ANOVA, using the binomial distribution homogeneity test and by fitting a generalised linear model (GLM) with logit link function. Radicle or seedling appearance were considered as success, and the lack of radicle or seedling as failure. We demonstrated the conflict in using different statistical methods. Analysis of the data based on the homogeneity test for binomial distribution showed that laser light stimulation of Lavatera seeds significantly affected seedling emergence starting from day-10 of scoring, until the end of scoring on day-21. Significant differences in the germination of seeds stimulated with laser for 1, 10 (scoring day-13 to day-21), 15 (only for scoring day-10 and day-17) and 30 minutes as compared with the control were found. Data analysis based on fitting a GLM with logit link function was consistent with the results of the analysis based on the homogeneity test for binomial distribution. Concerning the occurrence of seedlings, statistical differences were found only for day-8. No differences were found for germination capacity.
