Abstrakt

This study assessed the preferences and frequency of herbs andspices use among the elderly. A survey was conducted in 2019-2020 among people over 60 years of age. The study included 357 individuals (73.6% were women). Nearly 60% of the surveyed population has an abnormal body mass index (BMI) and 41% of the population has a chronic condition, cardiovascular disease predominates. Every 3 respondents use medicinal plants and 41% of the all use them simultaneously with medicines. Over 70% of the population always use salt when preparing meals, only 10% completely exclude it and only 2% use salt with reduced sodium content. The most popular spices are pepper, garlic, and sweet paprika; among medicinal plants, thistle, mint, and lemon balm. Unfortunately, many valuable spice plants (e.g. cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, thyme, or oregano) that can enrich the diet with bioactive components are rarely or never used, so dietary education is needed.
