Behavioral changes in the course of homelessness and dermatological disease - case report

Abstrakt

This case report focuses on a homeless dog of unknown past and its recovery to full physical and mental health. The report describes cooperation between animal welfare organization, veterinary doctors and behaviorist who collectively had an effect on the recovery of the described animal: a homeless dog suffering from many illnesses. The relationship between chronic illness and stress is outlined. Evaluation of the severity of behavioral disorders in combination with signs of dermatological diseases, i.e. pain or pruritus, is very difficult, and the choice of proper treatment requires commitment, patience and knowledge. The introduction of behavioral treatment during medical treatment constitutes a big challenge, but in this particular case it was very successful and effective, so it may serve others as an example and encouragement to attempt treatment and socialization of animals, especially in times of growing empathy of the society towards homeless animals that need help.
