Cities and communes are places where many animals live. Despite attempts
to plan urban areas in a way they are nature friendly, high costs and often
lack of good will have caused animal species to inhabit public spaces in an
uncontrolled manner and to increase gradually their numbers. Feeding free-
living animals by the residents has a significant impact on the animals’ habitat.
At first, singular wild animals are accepted and even welcomed in public spaces,
but as their population grows, it leads to conflict situations. Problems that have
arisen from sharing human habitat lead often to ambiguous legal provisions
and undefined responsibilities. This article presents major issues related to
our responsibility for making public spaces safe for people and also for free-
living animal species.
